A hydrocyclone (often referred to in the shortened form cyclone) is a device to classify, separate or sort particles in a liquid suspension based on the ratio of their centripetal force to fluid resistance. This ratio is high for dense (where separation by density is required) and coarse (where separation by size is required) particles, and low for light and fine particles. Hydrocyclones also find application in the separation of liquids of different densities.

 

Hydrocyclone is a kind of equipment used for grading the ore pulp by using centrifugal force. Without motion and power unit, it needs to match with relevant slurry pump. It is mainly used in ore dressing industries for grading, separating, concentrating and desliming.

Ore pulp enters the cyclone under pressure from a centrifugal feed pump. The velocity of the mud causes the particles to rotate rapidly within the main chamber of the cone (i.e. like a tornado in a bottle). Light, fine solids and the liquid phase of the mud spiral inward and upward for discharge through the liquid outlet. Heavy, coarse solids tend to spiral outward and downward for discharge through the solids outlet or under flow.
